Ginkgo is effective for increasing cognitive ability, helping memory, increasing concentration capacity, reducing mental fog, helping depression and increasing vitality and passion.
Ginkgo works by increasing blood flow into the head, brain and body and getting the blood across the blood brain barrier. As one gets older, blood flow to the brain decreases and these negative symptoms result. Ginkgo is a wake up call. While it may help one to study, remember and be clearer in their thinking it works best with the ederly. Diminished cerebral circulation can also result in vertigo, ringing in the ear, Alzheimer's symptoms, forgetfulness and depression. Ginkgo can help all of this. Ginkgo may help circulatory headaches that are of a constricted nature. Ginkgo stimulates circulation throughout the body and can help those who run cold (Raynaud's syndrome), help cold hands and feet and warm one up.
Ginkgo also thins blood by diminishing platelet aggregating factor. While this can benefit many with thick blood and cardiac problems, Ginkgo is contraindicated for those already on blood thinner. One can thin their blood too much. Ginkgo does not work overnight and is best if used consistently over 2 weeks. It can be continued as a long term tonic, especially in the elderly.
Caution: Do not use with prescription blood thinners
