Menopause is the cessation of the monthly female menstrual cycle. Women who have not had a menstrual period for a year are considered postmenopausal. Most commonly, menopause takes place when a women is in her late forties or early fifties.
Many hormonal changes occur during menopause, including a severe decrease in estrogen. Estrogen loss also puts you at risk for more serious health problems. These include heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis.

Signs & Symptoms of menopause:
- loss of menstruation
- hot flashes (a sudden flush or warmth, often followed by sweating)
- sleep problems
- vaginal dryness
- mood swings or depression
To help combat these symptoms doctors are increasingly recommending hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This therapy distributes estrogen (and at times progesterone and testosterone) to women via pills or patches.
HRT may help relieve symptoms of menopause, but it comes at a high price. HRT increases the risk of several types of cancer including: breast cancer and cancer of the uterus. HDT also puts women at risk of developing blot clots. Annoying symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, cramping and irritiability are often present with HRT.
Naturopathic doctors looking for a natural alternative to the harsh HRT treatments have discovered that several plants are loaded with chemicals that act on the body like estrogen, aptly named PHYTOESTROGENS.
These plant estrogens are thousands of times weaker than natural estrogen, but they also circulate in the blood at levels thousands of times higher than estrogen. Therefore, phytoestrogens help alleviate the symptoms of menopause as effectively as HRT, but without the risk factors and side effects.
Phytoestrogens are highly present in Soy, Black Cohosh, Chaste Berry and Vitex. Several supplements are on the market that combine numerous phytoestrogens. Each womon's body works differently and with all the options on the market it is important to find one that suits your individual needs.
