It will help calm one down when going through hard times emotionally and mentally, or when in recovery therapy and in turmoil.
The down side of Valerian is that if taken during the day, it can make one feel tired, sedated or a little out of it.
Valerian is the strongest western herbal painkiller. It will reduce pain in the musculo-skeletal system (i.e. muscle and joint pain from injury, accidents, work outs, surgeries).
It is also a smooth muscle relaxer for pain from menstrual cramps, digestive cramps, gall bladder, and kidney stones.
It will help calm hyperactivity in adults and children.
If one becomes too fatigued by its use, cut back on the dose. One can increase dose appropriate to the stressful situation at hand.
Valerian can aggravate depression, as it is a sedative.
Valerian can be used to decrease the symptoms from withdrawal from barbiturates. It helps the emotional agitation of quitting cigarette smoking.
Contrary to popular beliefs, Valium was not derived from Valerian. They sound alike and are for similar conditions, but are otherwise not related.
Caution: Do not use with prescription pain killers or if suffering from severe depression. Valerian will create unpleasant side effects in about 10% of those who use it. It can create disturbed sleep or a hang over fog in the morning after. Discontinue if this occurs.
