Homeopathy, founded by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s, is based on the idea that "like cures like;" that is, substances that cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can also cure those same symptoms in someone who is sick.
The word homeopathy comes from the Greek words "homeo" meaning similar and "pathos"meaning disease or suffering.
How do I know which Homeopathic Medicine to Take?
Take the same substance that causes the symptoms.
Symptoms are signs of the body's best efforts to re-establish it's own natural balance. We can view symptoms like a fire alarm. In homeopathy, rather than turning off the alarm (simply supressing the symptoms), we look at the reason why the alarm has gone off.
With homeopathic treatment, we see that the same natural substances that cause a set of symptoms if given to a healthy individual in large quantities can also stimulate a sick individual to get better, if given tiny amounts (micro-doses). This principal - "The Law of Similars" or like cures like is also in conventional medicine as we see with allergy treatments.
An Example:
If you peel an onion, your eyes burn, itch and water. You might have a runny nose and begin to sneeze. If you had similar symptoms during a cold--a runny nose, watery eyes & sneezing--a minute dose of Allium cepa (the red onion) would help your body heal itself.
This so-called law of similars gives homeopathy its name: "homeo" for similar, "pathy" designating disease. In his experiments, Hahnemann developed a method of "potentizing" homeopathic remedies by diluting them in a water-alcohol solution and then vigorously shaking the mixtures. His observations of patients convinced him that a high degree of dilution not only minimizes the side effects of the remedies but also enhances their medical efficacy.
Homeopathic treatment should not be confused with any other type of medicinal care. Its guiding principles are unlike those for herbal therapies or conventional drugs. The guidelines for testing, prescribing and using homeopathic remedies have been developed for this form of treatment alone.
When it comes to homeopathy, LESS IS DEFINITELY MORE!
